Data Discovery

Why first-party data alone isn’t enough without partnerships, what Apple’s Private Click Measurement actually does, and whether you need a CDP at all. Data guides built to be used, not just admired.

Data is only useful once you can act on it. In here: what Australia’s privacy reforms actually require of you, why out-of-home advertisers are adopting clean rooms, whether a CDP is worth the investment for your business, and how lookalike and propensity modeling actually work under the hood. Less theory, more of the decisions you’ll need to make with your own data.

Where Privacy And Identity Actually Stand Right Now

Three things worth knowing before you read anything else in this archive, because a lot of data and privacy content online is still written for a landscape that’s already changed.

AreaWhere it actually stands
Australian Privacy ActTranche 1 mostly in force since mid-2025, including the statutory tort for serious privacy invasions. One deadline still ahead: automated decision-making transparency disclosures, due 10 December 2026.
Chrome and third-party cookiesGoogle reversed deprecation in April 2025. Cookies stay on by default in Chrome. Safari, Firefox and Brave still block them, unaffected by that reversal either way.
Privacy SandboxMostly shut down in October 2025. The APIs meant to replace cookie-based tracking, Topics, Protected Audience, Attribution Reporting, are retired, not paused.

The practical upshot: identity strategy built around a single browser vendor’s roadmap just proved itself fragile in real time. First-party data and modelled measurement, covered throughout this archive, held their value regardless of which way that roadmap went.

Decision Matrix

Which Measurement Method Actually Answers Your Question

This archive covers four distinct measurement approaches, and the most common mistake is picking one on reputation rather than fit. What each is actually built to answer:

If your question is…The right tool is…
“Which digital touchpoints contributed to this conversion?”Multi-touch attribution, with the caveats covered in Multi-Touch Attribution
“Did this campaign actually cause the sale, or would it have happened anyway?”Incrementality testing with a genuine holdout group, not correlation dressed up as causation
“How do we connect an online touchpoint to an offline, in-store or phone sale?”The matching methods in Offline Attribution
“Do we actually need to unify our customer data into one activatable profile?”Start with CDP Considerations before shortlisting a platform

Most measurement stacks that underperform aren’t badly built, they’re just answering the wrong question well. Getting this match right before investing in tooling is the higher-leverage decision.

Why This Keeps Mattering

The Investment Case Hasn’t Weakened, It’s Strengthened

With Chrome’s cookie reversal, it would be reasonable to assume urgency around first-party data has eased. Industry investment data says the opposite: publishers and marketing leaders have kept increasing first-party data investment through 2026, not pulled back, because the case for it was never really about a looming cookie deadline in the first place.

The more durable argument is the one covered throughout this archive: first-party data is data you can actually govern, explain to a regulator, and keep functioning regardless of what any single browser vendor decides next. That argument didn’t get weaker when Chrome reversed course, it got proven, since teams who built around it were unaffected either way.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does “Data Discovery” actually cover?

Practical guides on collecting, understanding and acting on data: privacy reform and compliance, clean rooms, attribution (multi-touch and offline), CDPs and audience modeling, and building data partnerships beyond first-party data alone.

Is this only relevant to large businesses with dedicated data teams?

No. Several guides, particularly on CDP considerations and privacy compliance, are written for teams deciding whether they need a given tool or process at all, not just how to run one once you have it.

How is this different from the other Resources & Guides categories?

Data Discovery is about the underlying data itself, collection, privacy, attribution and modeling. Marketing Marvels, Media Mastery and Monetization Magic cover what you do with it once it’s in hand.

How often is this archive updated?

Whenever there’s a genuinely useful guide to add, not on a fixed schedule. The archive above pulls every article in this category automatically, so it’s always current.

Do these guides connect to the advisory work you do?

Often, yes. Data governance, attribution and CDP decisions come up regularly in engagements covered on Business Challenges.
