The Media Guide Perspective

Consultancies quietly taking decisions that should sit with leadership. Google and Meta’s ad refund practices under fire. Retail media networks bending attribution rules in their own favour. This is where we take a position, not just report the news.

We’ve argued that generative AI isn’t inherently good or bad for your business, just badly implemented most of the time. That LLMs have real limits marketers keep ignoring in the rush to adopt them. That most martech turf wars are self-inflicted, and that the middle manager everyone wants to cut is usually the one holding the operating model together. If you want a take, not just a summary of what happened, this is the archive.

The Standing Arguments Behind This Column

Individual pieces here cover different topics, but a handful of positions recur because the same underlying pattern keeps showing up across different problems.

What The M&A Wave Means For Who’s Actually Accountable

Adtech and martech M&A ran hot through 2025, roughly 465 deals, up 13% on the year, headlined by Omnicom’s acquisition of IPG. Every consolidation story gets covered as a scale or capability story. It’s rarely covered as an accountability story, which is the gap worth naming.

When a platform or agency you rely on gets absorbed into a larger entity, the specific person who understood your setup, and the specific team accountable for a commitment made pre-merger, both routinely change without much warning. That’s the same accountability-drift pattern running through When Consultancies Overwhelm Business Leadership, just triggered by a different mechanism. A merger doesn’t automatically create the problem. It does remove the continuity that was quietly preventing it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does “The Media Guide Perspective” actually cover?

Opinion pieces that take a position: on consultancy overreach into business leadership, platform accountability (Google and Meta’s ad refund practices, made-for-advertising sites), the limits of AI and LLMs for marketers, retail media attribution, and martech decisions that don’t hold up under scrutiny.

How is this different from State of the Market?

State of the Market tracks what’s happening and why it’s commercially significant. The Media Guide Perspective is where we argue a point of view on it, including calling out practices we think are bad for the industry.

Are these Tim’s personal opinions, or The Media Guides’ official position?

Both. This is a solo practice, so the perspective published here is the same one applied in advisory engagements, not a separate editorial voice.

How often is this archive updated?

Whenever there’s a position worth taking, not on a fixed schedule. The archive above pulls every article in this category automatically, so it’s always current.

Do these opinions connect to the advisory work you do?

Often, yes. Several of these arguments, particularly on martech decisions, AI governance and platform accountability, come directly from work covered on Business Challenges.
